Thyroxine Replacement Therapy during Ramadan Fasting: Physicians' and Patients' Perceptions and Practices

Abstract Background Thyroxine (T4) therapy is taken on an empty stomach and no food for a short period. During Ramadan fasting (RF), Muslim patients may face difficulties taking levothyroxine as recommended. Participants Methods We performed mixed methods study of online survey 218 physicians to explore their perceptions practices. Also, we interviewed sample 172 hypothyroid establish practices source information. Their median age was 46 (17–90) years; they had hypothyroidism 5 years took thyroxine dose 100 µg daily.
